AAC Blasts Wike Over Intimidation Remarks Ahead of Council Elections

AAC Blasts Wike Over Intimidation Remarks Ahead of Council Elections

The African Action Congress (AAC), FCT chapter has criticized Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, over recent remarks deemed “malicious” and “anti-democratic” ahead of the forthcoming FCT Area Council elections.

In a press release signed by the FCT AAC Chairman, Agena Robert Ande, the party condemned Wike’s comment advising opposition parties not to “waste their time and money” contesting in the polls, calling it an “attempt to intimidate and disenfranchise” residents of the FCT.

“Wike’s statements are a brazen display of arrogance and a desperate attempt to justify the APC’s notorious record of electoral malpractices,” Ande said. “His justification of rigging in FCT, citing Tinubu’s so-called achievements, is laughable and a diversion from the harsh realities facing Nigerians.”

The AAC accused the Tinubu-led federal government of worsening the living conditions of ordinary citizens, citing the naira’s devaluation, spiraling inflation, mass unemployment, and a crumbling social infrastructure. “Many youths have been pushed into degrading jobs just to survive, while basic services like healthcare, education, and electricity remain in a state of collapse,” the statement added.

The statement also took aim at Wike’s performance as FCT Minister, accusing him of prioritizing lavish building renovations over fair wages for teachers, resulting in prolonged school closures. “Primary school children have been out of school for months under his watch,” Ande stated. “Meanwhile, he renovates buildings with billions and presides over widespread corruption, land grabbing, and blatant disregard for the rule of law.”

The party further condemned threats by the FCT administration to revoke residents’ property rights over political affiliations, warning that such intimidation tactics represent “a clear violation of democratic norms.”

“Wike must stop blackmailing the people of the FCT and allow them to exercise their democratic rights freely. We will not be cowed by threats. The AAC is fully prepared to mobilize the people and contest the upcoming elections,” the statement concluded.

In an exclusive interview with the party’s Lagos State Chairman, Ayoyinka Oni, the AAC leader confirmed that the primary election held in the state proceeded smoothly, with no reports of irregularities or disputes.

The African Action Congress (AAC) has expressed satisfaction over the peaceful and transparent conduct of its local government primary election in Lagos State, describing the exercise as successful and encouraging for the party’s grassroots structure.

In an exclusive interview with the party’s Lagos State Chairman, Ayoyinka Oni, the AAC leader confirmed that the primary election held in the state proceeded smoothly, with no reports of irregularities or disputes.

“It went well as expected. It was a good experience for all and especially our new members,” Oni said. “We started the day with membership registration and renewal of the party card. Delegates were confirmed and registered. It was a straightforward primary since all contestants came unopposed.”

Oni attributed the seamless process to the party’s strategic preparation and commitment to internal democracy. According to him, “The secret is making sure the wards had perfected all their delegates before getting to the state. We confirmed their membership and then provided them with delegate tags before our primaries were conducted.”

He further revealed that any potential issues were proactively handled at the grassroots level, which contributed to the calm and orderliness observed during the primary.

“No report of irregularities,” Oni stated. “All members that became candidates yesterday were screened by their local government areas even before they got to the state. Whatever issues must have been settled at the local government level before the day of the primary. We had a smooth process.”

With the successful completion of the primaries, the AAC is now shifting focus to the campaign phase. “We look forward to the campaign as we tell our people to vote for our great party at local government areas,” Oni concluded.

Party members have also expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the primary election, with many sending congratulatory messages to the candidates. One of the party members, Hungbeme Moses Wanayon, wrote in a statement:

“Congratulations to all leaders and candidates for a successful Lagos AAC primary election. Now the real work is on us all. We must go out there to campaign rigorously, both online and within our communities. E ma sun!

AAC Slams INEC Over CVR Confusion, Questions Capacity to Conduct Credible 2026 Council Elections

AAC Slams INEC Over CVR Confusion, Questions Capacity to Conduct Credible 2026 Council Elections

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the African Action Congress (AAC) has strongly criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its apparent lack of preparation for the upcoming FCT Area Council elections, scheduled for February 26, 2026.

In a joint statement signed by the FCT AAC Chairman, Agena Robert Ande , and Organising Secretary, Sydney Usman Godwin, the party expressed deep disappointment over INEC’s failure to provide clear guidance on the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

The AAC FCT warned that thousands of young Nigerians who recently turned 18 could be denied their right to vote unless voter registration resumes promptly and electoral procedures are clarified.

The party also criticised INEC over confusion surrounding the CVR restart. While there were initial reports that registration would resume on May 27, the commission later denied the information, causing public uncertainty. The AAC described the mixed signals as evidence of poor planning, which could undermine the credibility of the 2026 elections in the FCT.

“The African Action Congress (AAC) FCT chapter expresses profound concern and disappointment over the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) egregious lack of preparedness for the forthcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) elections,” the statement read.

“It is unacceptable that tens of thousands of eligible voters, especially newly eligible young Nigerians, face the risk of disenfranchisement due to the commission’s failure to resume CVR and facilitate voter participation,” the party said.

The AAC FCT issued several demands to INEC, including:

The immediate announcement of a clear and fixed date for the resumption of Continuous Voter Registration.

Prompt production and distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to all eligible registrants.

Acceleration of the voter transfer and update processes to avoid unnecessary disenfranchisement.

The party called on INEC to act decisively and transparently to safeguard the democratic rights of all eligible voters in the FCT.

“We urge INEC to rise to the occasion and prove its commitment to democratic principles. The AAC FCT chapter will continue to monitor developments closely and will not hesitate to take necessary actions to defend the rights of our members and the wider electorate,” the statement concluded.

AAC, ZLP, YPP, Others Protest LASIEC’s Charges for Local Council Election Participation

AAC, ZLP, YPP, Others Protest LASIEC’s Charges for Local Council Election Participation

A coalition of political parties under the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Lagos State has called on the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to scrap administrative charges imposed on candidates contesting in the upcoming local government elections slated for July 12.

The protest was led by five political parties—Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), African Action Congress (AAC), Young Progressives Party (YPP), All People’s Party (APP), and Accord Party—whose representatives staged a peaceful march to the LASIEC office on Monday, demanding the immediate suspension of the fees or face legal consequences.

According to LASIEC’s election guidelines, candidates are required to pay administrative fees of N150,000 for chairmanship aspirants, N75,000 for vice-chairmanship, and N50,000 for councillorship. However, female candidates and persons with disabilities are exempted. The payments are to be made into any Nigerian bank using a designated revenue code (33101) and agency code (77095) in favor of the Lagos State Government.

The protesting party leaders criticized the fees as unconstitutional and a barrier to political participation. Speaking on behalf of the group, Adekunle Mode-Adenipebi, Lagos State Chairman of ZLP and IPAC Organising Secretary, argued that LASIEC’s mandate is to conduct elections, not to generate revenue for the government.

“LASIEC is not a revenue-generating body. These fees are unjust and unconstitutional. Similar charges were abolished in recent local council elections in Ogun and Oyo states. We demand the immediate withdrawal of these levies,” Mode-Adenipebi stated.

He also compared LASIEC’s actions to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which does not impose such fees on aspirants contesting higher offices, including the presidency and National Assembly.

According to Mode-Adenipebi, political parties may impose charges internally, but it is inappropriate for an electoral body to do so, as it risks disenfranchising aspiring candidates, especially those with limited financial resources.

Echoing this concern, Dele Oladeji, Chairman of the Accord Party in Lagos, warned that many aspirants may be forced out of the race due to financial constraints. “LASIEC is asking for what many candidates simply cannot afford. If the commission does not reverse this, we will seek redress in court by Wednesday,” he said.

Other party leaders, including Abiola Adeyemi (APP), Ayoyinka Oni (AAC), and former IPAC Chairman Olusegun Mobolaji (YPP), also condemned the charges as undemocratic and exclusionary.

The demonstration began at Birrel Avenue in Sabo-Yaba and concluded at LASIEC’s premises. Despite the peaceful nature of the protest, no LASIEC official came forward to address the concerns raised by the group.

The parties insist that if LASIEC does not reverse its decision and refund candidates who have already paid, they will proceed with legal action to defend democratic participation.

One Million Per State Will Dismantle the failed Establishment,” Says AAC Leader in Call for Mass Uprising

Ayoyinka Oni, the Lagos State Chairman of the African Action Congress (AAC), has taken to social media to urge Nigerians to reject what he describes as the “criminal merger” taking place among the country’s old political class.

In a post shared widely on Thursday via his X handle, Oni wrote, “Tomorrow we decamp. Not alone, together with the masses, for the masses and to the masses.”

He criticized the attention given to reports of a small group of defectors aligning with a major party, stating, “I don’t know why you are bothered about some useless crooks not more than 100 decamping to a party that has ruined your life for over 10 years. You should be happy the two criminal parties which were always one are merging.”

Oni, known for his activism and grassroots mobilization, emphasized the AAC’s commitment to a mass-oriented political revolution. He urged citizens to join the AAC in a collective effort to dismantle entrenched political structures, saying, “You better join the party for the masses #AACParty and let us bury our oppressors all together starting from the day we are ready.”

In a call for strategic numbers and mass action, he added, “250 million Nigerians are too much, one million per state is enough, trust me, they would run.”

PRESS STATEMENT: INEC’S INEPTITUDE; MISTAKE OR TREACHERY

PRESS STATEMENT: INEC’S INEPTITUDE; MISTAKE OR TREACHERY

The Presidential Campaign Council of the African Action Congress and our candidate, Omoyele Sowore, wish to express our dismay at the terribly poor performance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the conduct of the presidential and national assembly elections last Saturday, February 25, 2023. While INEC’s antecedents have inspired little to no confidence in the Nigerian electorate, Saturday’s performance was a new low and raises the question of whether the Commission’s serial ineptitude is due to mistakes or intentional and treacherous acts of collusion with corrupt politicians against the democratic aspirations of the Nigerian people.

With four years to prepare and a huge budget of N305 billion, the Commission’s scandalous performance in Saturday’s elections pushes the boundaries of ineptitude. Its actions suggest a more sinister motivation.

Distribution of election materials and the movement of its staff to polling units across the country were badly planned, if planned at all, and poorly coordinated resulting in disruptive delays, and on many occasions, canceled voting in numerous polling units nationwide. In places where its staff showed up, no provisions were made for their welfare, leaving many of them vulnerable to inducement by unscrupulous political operatives.

There were shortages of ballot papers, the Biomodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices, results sheets, and other essential election materials in numerous polling units. Many of its staff reported limited ballot papers for the election, and where ballot papers were available, the logos of some political parties were missing. These unacceptable inadequacies directly led to the mass disenfranchisement of millions of Nigerians.

Interestingly, despite INEC’s repeated assurances to Nigerians on the availability and role of the BVAS devices in ensuring the credibility of the electoral process from accreditation to the electronic transmission of results, the BVAS experiment turned out a monumental failure on electronic transmission of results. The Commission’s staff complained of their inability to upload and transmit results on the system at the polling units as it ought to be. This apparently deliberate malfunction opened the door for potential manipulation of election results on a massive scale as they transited from the units to the wards, and then to the local government collation centers. The failure to transmit the results electronically from the polling units was also a clear violation of the Electoral Act 2022, and already calls to question the legality of the elections.

We also observed the inadequate security for Nigerians as they went to the polls. In states such as Lagos, Rivers, and Kogi for example, political thugs threatened, intimidated, and in many instances, attacked Nigerians as they exercised their constitutional right to vote. Ballot boxes were snatched and destroyed, ballot papers were burnt before they could be counted, certain politicians invaded collation centers with thugs and security operatives in a bid to alter election results; overall , the general sanctity of the process was violated, sometimes with the active collusion of INEC staff and security agencies.

This is already the country’s most expensive election. When the dust settles, it might also go down as its worst ever.

We condemn the use of thugs to stifle the free expression of the democratic will of the Nigerian people. While we recognize that many of these thugs – including those who lost their lives while attacking their fellow citizens – are themselves victims of the corrupt politicians and greedy oligarchs who are the sole beneficiaries of the failed system in the country, we encourage them to join their compatriots in the task of national liberation instead of making themselves tools at the hands of their oppressors.

INEC must be careful because it’s shenanigans are clearly testing the patience of the Nigerian people. The results it proposes to announce in the concluded elections must reflect the votes and results recorded at the polling units.

Finally, it should be stated that INEC’s woeful performance is reflective of the crass ineptitude which has become the defining feature of the Buhari-led APC government. Therefore, whatever the outcome of these elections, the Nigerian people must be ready to assert and defend their freedom, and they can rest assured that the African Action Congress shall stand by them in that endeavour.

Signed

Peace Committee Meeting: Sowore Protests Buhari’s Human Rights Abuses, Refuses To Stand Up For The Outgoing President

The presidential candidate of African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore refused to stand up, amidst all the presidential candidates on their feets to honor the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mohammed Buhari while giving his closing remark.

The human rights defender said his refusal to stand up when Buhari was making his closing remark was a protest against the failure of the president of NIGERIA and his utter disregard for human rights and him being the worst President of Nigeria.

While other presidential candidates rose on their feets to honor the president, Sowore, the presidential candidate of African Action Congress stood his ground, sat down in protest.
